UCONN Wins Final Four 2011The only thing that could stop Kemba Walker and Connecticut’s amazing run was the final buzzer.

On a night when the massive arena felt like a dusty old gym, UConn made Butler look like the underdog it really was, winning the national championship Monday night with an old-fashioned, grinding 53-41 beatdown of the Bulldogs.

Walker finished with 16 points for the Huskies (32-9), who won their 11th straight game since closing the regular season with a 9-9 Big East record that foreshadowed none of this.

They closed it out with a defensive showing for the ages, holding Butler to a 12-for-64 shooting. That’s 18.8 percent, the worst ever in a title game.

Tiger Woods, who dropped to seventh in golf’s world rankings today, isn’t the favorite to win the Masters Tournament for the first time since 1999.

Three-time Masters champion Phil Mickelson is 13-2 at the Las Vegas Hilton’s Race and Sports Book and at William Hill Plc (WMH) to repeat as champion this week and win a fifth major golf title. Woods, who is stuck in a 17-month winless streak, is 9-1 at both bookmakers.

Mickelson, 40, heads to Augusta National Golf Club after winning the Houston Open yesterday with a tournament-record score of 20-under par for his first title since last year’s Masters. Mickelson in 2006 won the Bellsouth Classic the week before his second Masters victory.

iowa poker law

The Iowa bill that would legalize Internet poker in the state appears to have little to no chance of passing in its current form, making Iowa the latest state to reject state-level legislation to regulate online gambling.

However, the bill may not be permanently dead. Instead, the bill will likely be amended to instead request a report on Internet gambling from the Iowa Racing and Gaming Commission, who could give suggestions on how to improve a bill, and insight on how it might affect the current gambling industry in the state

ESPN WSOP

Poker fans across the world look forward to ESPN’s coverage of the World Series of Poker each year, and now again, for the third year, the broadcasts have been nominated for a Sports Emmy. This year, the category is “Live Event Turnaround—World Series of Poker Final Table.”

ESPN receives numerous nominations every year for their far reaching sports coverage. This year they received exactly 52 nominations for Sports Emmy Awards including 12 nominations for the 2010 FIFA World Cup event in South Africa and five nominations for NFL broadcasting.

Not surprisingly, this year ESPN earned the most nominations of any other submitting brand for the tenth time in 11 years. The Sports Emmy Award nominations are decided by the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences. Winners will be presented with their awards on May 2, 2011.

VCU Final Four

Virginia Commonwealth University would make at least one Las Vegas bettor $50,000 richer if it ends its run in college basketball’s national tournament with a championship.

The Las Vegas Hilton’s Race and Sports Book three months ago took a $10 wager on VCU to win the title at 5,000 to 1 odds. Virginia Commonwealth is two victories away from becoming the national champion after winning five straight games to reach the Final Four in Houston.

VCU was a 200-1 long shot at the start of the National Collegiate Athletic Association tournament, while Butler University, the Rams’ opponent in the national semifinals, had odds of about 150-1. With at least one of those teams guaranteed to play for the championship on April 4, the Hilton is among those sports books eyeing sizeable payouts.

“I can’t give you specific numbers, but it’s probably not good,” Jay Kornegay, executive director of the Hilton Race and Sports Book, said yesterday in a telephone interview. “We have some liability associated with VCU, so we’re definitely not rooting for the Rams this weekend.”

Kornegay wouldn’t disclose who placed the bet. MyNetBets.com reported the 5,000-to-1 wager this week.

Dmitry Gromov Dominates Vienna Final Table

Dmitry Gromov Dominates Vienna Final Table

Although the €447,840 first-place prize marked his biggest career score, Gromov is no stranger to the winner’s circle, having posted a first-place finish at the PokerStars Russian Poker Series Kiev Grand Final last December for $201,363 and at the 2010 Venetian Deep Stack Extravaganza III in Las Vegas last July for $316,759.

He now has well over $1 million in career live tournament earnings.

WPT Vienna drew 555 Players creating a €1,776,000 prizepool and breaking the record for entrants in a European WPT event set at WPT Amneville last November.

Although Gromov came into the final holding the chip lead, 24-year-old Italian Alessio Isaia’s name was on the marquee, having booked a win at WPT Venice for €380,000 and finished runner-up on the Malta leg of the PokerStars Italian Poker Tour for €80,000 last month.

Barry bonds Court

San Francisco, California — Each year at this time, baseball loves to put on its best face. Unfortunately, this year the game’s springtime face has an ugly pimple from its past that simply won’t fade away.

Opening day is at hand. But when Major League teams begin play on Thursday, the game’s all-time leading home run hitter will not be throwing out a ceremonial first pitch. Barry Bonds will be sitting in a courtroom as a defendant, facing possible jail time for allegedly lying to a grand jury about his use of steroids in 2003.

Nostalgia is a big part of baseball. But this sort of nostalgia is not preferred. The Bonds trial is leftover debris from a time that Major League commissioner Bud Selig wishes desperately to put behind him, a time when performance-enhancing drugs were allowed to practically take over the game because of lax testing standards.

Indeed, if the timing is just right — or just wrong — it is possible that the Bonds verdict will be announced on April 8 during the Giants’ home opener at AT&T Park, barely two miles down the street from the local federal courthouse.
